Highmark Health announced today the appointment of Nebeyou Abebe as Senior Vice President of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), effective Monday, March 22, 2021. Abebe brings nearly 20 years of experience leading SDOH, population health, and employee health and well-being initiatives for public and private sector organizations. In his role at Highmark Health, Abebe will lead a SDOH team that spans across the enterprise and forges close ties with the communities in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Delaware, and New York, uncovering non-clinical opportunities to improve the health and well-being of members and the region at large. Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people live, work, learn, and play that can impact up to 80% of an individuals’ health outcomes before the healthcare system can intervene. Prior to joining the Sodexo Group in 2013, Abebe served as associate director of health systems for the Louisiana Public Health Institute, where he played a leading role in building and strengthening local health IT infrastructure and testing innovative approaches to make measurable improvements in health, patient care and cost. He has also served in health communications and social marketing positions, including directing a national CDC campaign to reduce the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. Reverend Dr. Tyree A. Anderson is the 15th Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Ensley in Birmingham, AL. He is the Chairman of the Board for Harambee International Development Corporation, a 501C3 organization that does humanitarian work around the world. Dr. Anderson is also an accomplished author and a significant voice on issues such as: returning citizens, prison reform, voter reform, international missions, global business development, and the relevancy of the Black Church. Ms. Elána R. Frazier joined the Columbia Urban League Young Professionals in 2017 and currently serves as president of the chapter. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, she’s called Columbia, South Carolina home for 4 years now. There I served in the role of the Director of Supply Chain, and a Lead member of the Acquisition Team until retiring in 2017. My name is Jon Hawkins and I was raised in Los Angeles, CA along with four siblings. I’m happily married to Katrice A. Tori works at Killeen High School as a football & track coach. The entire family are graduates of Grambling State University. I’m a proud retired Lieutenant Colonel after serving 23 years in the United States Army. Currently, I work as a Program Manager for the Department of Veteran Affairs office in Austin, Tx. I joined this wonderful band of brotherhood through Xi Chapter at Grambling State University during Fall 1988. I have served my chapter and community faithfully as the Director of Education for ten years and the Sigma Beta Club coordinator for six years simultaneous. Under my leadership, Theta Delta Sigma chapter has won numerous awards such as, 2016 & 2017- Best Sigma Beta Club award for state of Texas and Gulf Coast Region, 2017 & 2018 - Sigma Beta Club Advisor of the year for Gulf Coast Region, 2017- Education Award at the 103rd Anniversary Conclave in Detroit, MI, 2019 - Outstanding Alumni Chapter Education Program for Gulf Coast, Gulf Coast Education Award by International Director, and 2020 - Best Education Program for Lone Star state. I spearheaded the chapter efforts to partner with New Horizan Computer learning center to establish $60,000 in STEM scholarships for high school seniors in Central Texas. John represents Sodexo in partnering with and developing strong commercial relationships with local communities in Mid-Atlantic Region to develop business outcomes and promote success in Sodexo’s corporate responsibility and sustainability programs. John is an alumnus of Alcorn State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Institution Management, and a Master of Business Administration from Bellarmine University - Louisville Kentucky. John is celebrating 35 years with Sodexo inclusive of 7 Sodexo leadership roles and several years as a member of Board of Directors of several organizations. John serves as a founding member of the Gathering Spot of Washington, DC.
